Bike taxi services are rapidly expanding across small and large cities in the country, but they are now becoming a serious concern for passenger safety. Drivers associated with companies such as Rapido, Uber, and Ola are often seen violating traffic rules in an attempt to complete more rides in less time.
On city roads, bike taxi riders are frequently observed jumping red lights, overspeeding, driving recklessly, and ignoring traffic regulations. Such behavior directly puts the lives of passengers riding behind them at serious risk.
According to experts, the number of two-wheeler accidents in the country has been increasing continuously, which itself is a matter of grave concern. Despite this, many bike taxi drivers neither wear helmets themselves nor provide proper safety measures for passengers. In many cases, passengers are made to travel without helmets.
The question arises: who has given bike taxi drivers and operating companies the right to put passengers’ lives in danger? Risking public safety merely to earn more money and complete additional rides is an extremely serious issue.
Social organizations and citizens have demanded that bike taxi companies strictly follow safety regulations and ensure passenger protection. If companies continue to ignore safety standards, the government and courts should take suo motu cognizance and initiate strict action against them.
People have suggested that every company found violating safety norms should face a minimum penalty of ₹5 crore, so that passenger safety becomes a top priority and traffic rules are followed strictly.
Road safety experts believe that if strict measures are not implemented in time, accidents related to bike taxi services may increase even further in the coming years.
