Dhaka: The India-Bangladesh bus service has resumed after nearly 18 months, marking a significant step in strengthening cross-border connectivity between the two nations. The Agartala-Dhaka-Kolkata and Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala routes of the International Maitree Bus Service are now operational again. On the first day, the bus departed from Kolkata, passed through Dhaka, and reached the Akhura Integrated Check Post in Agartala.
This resumption reflects the strengthening ties between India and Bangladesh following Prime Minister Tariq Rahman’s tenure. Just last week, both countries reinstated visa services, further easing cross-border travel.
Boost to Tourism, Trade, and Culture
Speaking to the media, Tourism Minister Sushant Chaudhary emphasized the importance of enhanced regional connectivity. He highlighted that integration with rail links, better use of the Maitree Bridge, and improved port access would significantly benefit the Northeast economy and promote business opportunities. Chaudhary expressed hope that smoother travel and stronger security measures would deepen people-to-people relationships.
On the first day of service, 18 passengers traveled from Kolkata to Agartala via Dhaka. The service had been suspended about a year and a half ago following a decision by Mohammad Yunus, but its reinstatement is expected to generate new economic activity and encourage cross-border engagement.
Passengers and accompanying officials reported a generally smooth journey, with minor inconveniences in metropolitan areas, but overall travel conditions were normal. The regular resumption of the Agartala-Dhaka route is seen as a positive development that will enhance international connectivity, commerce, and friendly relations between India and Bangladesh.
