Rahul Gandhi Challenges Government Over Students’ Issues, Demands Parliamentary Debate; Is the Opposition Targeting Young Voters Ahead of 2029?

New Delhi, July 22 (SDNA): Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has accused the Central Government of avoiding discussion on students’ issues, asserting that if the government is genuinely committed to students’ welfare, it should hold a detailed debate on the matter in both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday itself.

After being detained during a protest in support of students outside the Prime Minister’s residence and later released, Rahul Gandhi said he had met the Lok Sabha Speaker on Tuesday morning to request a discussion on students’ concerns. According to him, the Speaker stated that the government’s approval would be required, which, Gandhi alleged, indicated that the government was unwilling to discuss the issue.

Rahul Gandhi said that matters related to education, employment, and youth directly affect the future of millions of students. Therefore, he argued, the government should clarify its position through an open parliamentary debate.

Political Significance Under the Spotlight

Political observers believe Rahul Gandhi’s continued focus on students and youth reflects the Opposition’s broader strategy to strengthen its connect with young voters by highlighting issues such as education, employment, and competitive examinations ahead of the next general election. The Opposition, however, maintains that its campaign is driven by the need to protect students’ rights and improve the country’s education system.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on the other hand, has accused the Opposition of politicising students’ concerns, while maintaining that the government continues to implement reforms in the education sector and create greater opportunities for young people.

With the confrontation over students’ issues intensifying both inside Parliament and on the streets, attention is now focused on whether the government will agree to a parliamentary debate and how the issue will shape the political discourse in the coming months.
