

New Delhi: (SDNA) India has taken a significant step in the transport and clean energy sector by launching its first hydrogen-powered train. Started on the Jind–Sonipat railway section in Haryana (around 90 km), this train is not just a new rail service but also an important experiment under India’s Green Hydrogen Mission.
At first glance, the question arises: when almost the entire broad-gauge railway network of Indian Railways has already been electrified, why is there a need for a hydrogen train?
The answer is not limited to replacing diesel fuel. The larger objective is to build a strong hydrogen ecosystem in India.
How Does a Hydrogen Train Work?
A hydrogen train does not use a diesel engine. Special tanks installed on the train store hydrogen gas. This hydrogen reacts with oxygen from the air inside a fuel cell to generate electricity.
The electricity produced through this process powers the train’s motor, air conditioning, lights, and other systems.
The process does not release smoke. The only emission is water vapour. Therefore, during operation, the train creates almost zero local emissions.
However, how environmentally friendly hydrogen truly is will depend on the source of electricity used for producing it.
Equipped with Modern Facilities
The 10-coach hydrogen train can carry around 2,600 passengers. It has been designed for suburban routes with operating speeds ranging from 75 to 120 km per hour.
The train includes metro-like automatic closing doors, modern display systems, air conditioning, and several advanced safety features.
Special sensors have been installed to provide immediate alerts in case of hydrogen leakage or fire-related risks.
The train is also claimed to be among the world’s most powerful hydrogen trains in its category.
If Electric Trains Already Exist, Why Hydrogen?
This is the most important question.
On routes where electric railway lines already exist, electric trains are still considered more energy-efficient and cost-effective compared to hydrogen trains.
However, the purpose of hydrogen trains is not limited to transporting passengers from one station to another.
India aims to become self-reliant in hydrogen production, safe storage, transportation, fuel cell technology, and the entire hydrogen ecosystem.
Therefore, this train should be seen as a technology demonstration and an industry-building initiative for the future hydrogen economy.
Will It Reduce Railway Fares?
At present, such expectations may not be realistic.
Developing a hydrogen train can cost around ₹80 crore. In addition, separate infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling is required, which involves significant investment.
Currently, green hydrogen is more expensive compared to electricity and diesel.
Therefore, this project is not aimed at immediately reducing passenger fares but at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and creating a more stable energy future.
In the future, if green hydrogen production expands on a large scale and costs decline, it could help control operational expenses.
Who Will Benefit?
Passengers will benefit from quieter operations, cleaner air, and a modern travel experience.
Railways will get an alternative solution for areas where installing electric railway infrastructure is difficult or extremely expensive.
The biggest advantage could be for the country’s energy transition goals. India has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Green hydrogen is considered a key technology for difficult sectors such as steel, fertilizers, and heavy transport.
This train represents an initial step in that direction.
If India achieves expertise in hydrogen technology, it can later be used in industries such as steel production, fertilizer manufacturing, heavy trucks, and ships, where relying only on electricity is challenging.
The Real Story
At first sight, this may appear to be just a new train, but in reality, it represents the beginning of a major transformation in India’s energy system.
Sometimes, a train does not just carry passengers.
It carries a new technology, a new industry, and a new direction for the future.
