

New Delhi: (SDNA) India’s clean energy journey has achieved a new milestone, with solar and wind power plants crossing the 100 GW electricity generation mark for the first time for a certain period.
On July 13, solar and wind energy generation crossed 103.7 GW. Two days later, on July 15, the achievement was repeated when generation first reached 102.42 GW and then touched 100.9 GW.
During the same afternoon, for a few minutes, 42.79 percent of India’s total electricity demand was met only through solar and wind energy, marking the highest-ever record.
Major Achievement for Clean Energy Mission
India’s renewable energy sector has witnessed rapid growth due to government policies, technological advancements, falling costs, and increasing investments.
During the financial year 2025-26, the country added 55.3 GW of new non-fossil fuel-based power capacity, nearly double compared to the previous year. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), this was the largest-ever annual expansion in the sector.
India achieved 50 percent of its total installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in June 2025, around five years ahead of the timeline set under the Paris Agreement.
Including hydropower, India’s total renewable energy capacity reached 288 GW by June 2025. Meanwhile, the combined capacity of solar and wind energy is expected to reach nearly 225 GW by the end of July.
Growing Capacity Brings New Grid Challenges
Although the rise in renewable energy capacity is a major achievement, it has also created new challenges for India’s power grid.
Solar and wind energy depend heavily on weather conditions. Solar generation can fall rapidly due to cloud cover, while wind power output can decline when wind speeds decrease. In such situations, the power system needs to quickly increase generation from other sources.
This is where the real test of the electricity grid begins.
Focus on Battery Storage and Smart Grid Systems
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is now focusing not only on adding new power generation capacity but also on improving grid flexibility.
Key measures include:
- Large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Demand response mechanisms to manage electricity consumption according to supply conditions
- Thermal power plants capable of quickly increasing or reducing generation when required
On the day India achieved 42.79 percent electricity generation from renewable sources, conventional power plants had to compensate for nearly 100 GW of additional power demand between afternoon and evening as solar generation declined rapidly after sunset.
The Biggest Challenge Ahead
Experts believe that every new renewable energy record will now not only represent higher generation but will also test the strength and flexibility of the entire electricity system.
Transmission networks, battery storage systems, power distribution companies (DISCOMs), and electricity markets will all play a crucial role in managing this transition.
If the grid fails to handle such large amounts of renewable energy, challenges may arise, including:
- Curtailment of renewable power generation
- Sudden fluctuations in electricity prices
- Possible disruptions in local power supply
India’s Next Phase of Clean Energy Growth
Over the past decade and a half, India’s clean energy journey has mainly focused on setting ambitious targets and achieving them.
The next decade will be about proving that the country’s power infrastructure is equally modern, reliable, and flexible enough to support these achievements.
Increasing power generation capacity is only one part of the mission. Delivering every unit of electricity safely and reliably to consumers is what truly fulfills the promise of clean energy growth.
The biggest achievement of the future may not simply be reaching 110 or 120 GW of renewable energy generation.
The real success will be when generating more than 100 GW of renewable electricity becomes a normal practice, and India’s power grid can manage it smoothly without any disruption.
