New Delhi, July 22 (SDNA): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticised the Congress protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, calling the incident a “shameful episode” in the history of Indian democracy.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi staged a protest at the gates of the Prime Minister’s residence without permission, describing it as irresponsible conduct.
Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Rahul Gandhi’s father, grandmother, and great-grandfather have all served as Prime Ministers of the country. He understands the dignity and importance of the Prime Minister’s residence, yet he behaved irresponsibly.”
He alleged that the Congress chose a location for political protest where security concerns and the dignity of constitutional offices should have been respected.
The BJP leader said that while the right to protest is an essential part of democracy, maintaining the dignity of constitutional institutions and important offices is equally important.
It may be noted that Congress leaders had staged a protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence over students’ issues, following which several Opposition leaders were detained. The incident has intensified the political exchange of allegations between the ruling party and the Opposition.
