In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Delhi Police will deploy AI-powered smart glasses to strengthen security during the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January. The new technology will help police officers identify suspects in crowded areas and trigger instant alerts if a person with a criminal record is detected.
AI-Enabled Smart Glasses
The smart glasses, developed by an Indian technology company, integrate facial recognition software (FRS) and thermal imaging capabilities. They are connected directly to the police database, which contains records of criminals and wanted individuals. This allows officers to verify identities in real-time while patrolling crowded locations.
How It Works
According to senior police officials, the glasses will be mobile-connected. When an officer wearing the glasses scans a person’s face, the system compares it with the police database.
- If no criminal record exists, a green signal is displayed.
- If the person has a criminal record, a red alert is triggered, enabling immediate action.
This technology significantly reduces the need for manual checks and helps maintain crowd safety efficiently.
Rapid and Accurate Identification
The facial recognition system can match faces within seconds, even if a person’s appearance has changed over the years. The smart glasses also feature thermal imaging, capable of detecting hidden metallic objects or weapons, further enhancing security in large gatherings.
Deployment Details
Sub-Inspectors and other field officers will use the glasses during Republic Day events. While officials did not disclose the exact number of units purchased or their cost, they confirmed that sufficient units are deployed for the occasion.
This marks a significant step in leveraging AI for public safety, demonstrating that the technology is no longer limited to answering queries or generating images—it is now actively being used to enhance real-world security operations.
