Nipania residents’ initiative against alleged extortion in the name of ‘Nek.’ Task Force fixes standard contribution amounts
Indore:
Concerned over growing complaints of alleged excessive monetary demands and inappropriate behavior by certain members of the transgender community during family celebrations, a meeting of the newly constituted Ward 36-37 Task Force was held at Maa Saraswati Temple premises in Tulsi Nagar, Nipania.
During the meeting, residents from various colonies in the area expressed concern over instances where families were allegedly pressured to pay exorbitant amounts as “Nek” (customary ceremonial gifts) on occasions such as childbirths, housewarming ceremonies, and other auspicious events. According to residents, demands ranging from ₹51,000 to ₹1 lakh have reportedly been made in some cases.
Following detailed discussions, the residents unanimously resolved to establish standard contribution amounts for such occasions. As per the decision, families may offer between ₹100 and ₹201 as Nek during festivals and routine visits. For housewarming ceremonies and new property inaugurations, residents agreed on an amount ranging from ₹1,100 to ₹2,100, while ₹1,100 was fixed as the customary contribution on the birth of a child.
The Task Force clarified that these amounts are only indicative community guidelines and that families remain free to offer higher amounts voluntarily, based on their personal choice and financial capacity.
The meeting also resolved that if any family faces undue pressure, harassment, abusive conduct, or any other unpleasant situation despite offering the agreed amounts, they should immediately contact the police helpline by dialing 112. Residents were also advised to inform members of the Ward 36-37 Task Force to seek prompt assistance and support.
The meeting was attended by Rajesh Tomar, Sandeep Joshi, Sanjay Yadav, Shiv Bahadur Singh, Narayan Prasad Pagare, Krishna Kumar Verma, Rupesh Sharma, Rupesh Malviya, Amit Trivedi, Rakesh Jaiswal, Lucky Raghuvanshi, Gaurav Dabar, Sachin Jain, Vivek Sharma, Amol Patil, Maheep Dhing, and a large number of residents representing various colonies of the Nipania area.
