Patna: Soon, people in Bihar will be able to withdraw wheat and rice from ATMs, just like cash. The move aims to eliminate long queues at government ration shops and save valuable time for citizens. The Bihar government has approved the central government’s proposal for the “Grain ATM” system, making Bihar the fourth state in India to implement this innovative ration distribution method. Initially, the scheme will be launched as a pilot project in selected districts.
What Minister Lesi Singh Says About the Grain ATM Scheme
Bihar’s Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution Minister, Lesi Singh, said that the introduction of Grain ATMs will increase transparency in ration distribution and curb irregularities. She noted that the central government had sent a letter to Bihar seeking consent to implement the scheme. Following Bihar’s approval, the scheme will commence once the green signal is received from the center.
“The Grain ATM initiative is an excellent step by the central government. Ration card holders will be able to access their entitlements without hassle, saving both time and effort,” said Lesi Singh.
How Grain ATMs Will Work
Minister Singh explained that Grain ATMs will function similarly to cash ATMs. Ration card holders will insert their card, enter a PIN, and withdraw their allotted quantity of wheat or rice, just like withdrawing money.
Which State Introduced Grain ATMs in India?
The Grain ATM scheme was first launched in Odisha, making it the pioneer state to provide this facility to ration card holders. Subsequently, Rajasthan and Haryana adopted the initiative, with Bihar now set to become the fourth.
