Assam Horror: Woman Allegedly Gang-Raped by Seven Men Near Silchar Bypass, ₹10,000 Extorted; One Arrested

Guwahati/Silchar: A shocking case of alleged gang rape and extortion has emerged from Assam’s Cachar district, sending shockwaves across the state. A 28-year-old woman has accused seven men of sexually assaulting her at knifepoint and forcing her to transfer ₹10,000 via UPI during the incident. Police have arrested one accused and stated that the investigation is ongoing.

According to officials, the incident took place on February 19 along the Silchar bypass road, a few kilometers from the town. The survivor had gone on an outing with her boyfriend when a group of men, reportedly travelling in a Mahindra Thar, allegedly intercepted their vehicle.

Allegations in FIR

As per the FIR, the accused allegedly threatened the couple with a knife, restrained them, and sexually assaulted the woman in the presence of her partner. The complainant stated that at least seven men were involved. After the alleged assault, the attackers reportedly forced her to transfer ₹10,000 to one of their bank accounts through a digital payment platform.

Family members claimed that the assailants initially asked the couple about their residence before suddenly attacking them.

Case Gains Attention After Journalist Assault

The matter reportedly gained public attention after a local journalist in Silchar alleged that he was assaulted by relatives of one of the accused for reporting the incident. According to the journalist, he was stopped near the National Highway Road Police Station and questioned about his coverage of the case before being physically attacked. Bystanders intervened and prevented further escalation. The incident subsequently went viral on social media.

Political Reactions

The case has sparked political reactions. Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev met the Cachar Superintendent of Police and demanded strict action. The Trinamool Congress leader stated that no attempt should be made to suppress the case and called for a transparent investigation.

One Accused Arrested

Police have arrested Nilotpala Das, a 25-year-old resident of Tapovan Nagar in Silchar. According to police sources, the survivor identified him from photographs, leading to his detention. During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted being present at the scene but denied participating in the sexual assault. He reportedly claimed that he and his associates targeted parked couples to extort money.

Preliminary investigation confirms that ₹10,000 was transferred via UPI during the incident. Authorities are examining charges related to gang rape, criminal intimidation, robbery, and extortion.

Police Statement

Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das said:
“We are examining the case from all possible angles, including extortion, gang rape, and other potential aspects. We urge the public to maintain peace and refrain from spreading unverified information. We are awaiting the final medical report from Silchar Medical College and Hospital. A detailed statement will be issued once the investigation is complete.”

Sections Invoked

An FIR has been registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to criminal intimidation, robbery, unlawful acts by multiple persons, gang rape, assault with intent to disrobe, and outraging the modesty of a woman.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have indicated that further arrests may follow.
