Controversy in Pakistan Ahead of T20 World Cup: Australia Sends B-Team

Ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, controversy has erupted in Pakistan cricket circles after Australia decided to rest its key players for the ongoing T20 series against Pakistan. While Pakistan defeated Australia’s inexperienced side by 22 runs in the first T20 in Lahore, analysts and former players in Pakistan have criticized the move, calling it disrespectful to fans and undermining the seriousness of the series.

Absence of Star Players Sparks Outrage

Australia rested several of its top players, including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, Tim David, and Nathan Ellis. In addition, experienced players like captain Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, and Josh Inglis were also left out of the first match playing XI. Australia justified this decision by citing player fitness concerns and the need to keep them fresh for the World Cup. However, in Pakistan, this has been perceived as downgrading the competitive value of the series.

Analysts Call It an Insult to Fans

Former captains and cricket analysts in Pakistan expressed strong criticism. Analyst Omair Alvi called the move a direct insult to fans, stating that not fielding the best players in a touring squad is beyond comprehension. Former captain Moin Khan echoed the concern, highlighting that recent tours by teams like New Zealand and South Africa also featured B-teams. “It seems major teams come here just to tick a box, undermining domestic cricket and the excitement of the series,” he said.

Former Selectors Express Concern

Former chief selector Haroon Rasheed described the decision as confusing, pointing out that it denies Pakistan the opportunity to prepare against top players in Asian conditions ahead of the World Cup. Experts argue that facing weaker sides prevents Pakistan’s team from gaining realistic match experience needed for major tournaments. Australia’s tour marks its first visit to Pakistan since 2022, but the absence of key stars has diluted the historic nature of the tour.

Despite the first-match victory, the debate over Australia’s B-team selection continues to stir strong opinions in Pakistan, adding tension just before the T20 World Cup.
