Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu, currently promoting her upcoming film Assi, expressed deep concern over the rising number of sexual assault cases in India. During a media interaction in Jaipur, she highlighted the alarming fact that even children as young as 10 are involved in such crimes and called for urgent societal introspection.
Rising sexual crimes demand attention
Taapsee said, “Nearly 80 rape cases are reported in the country every day. If even a 10-year-old is committing such a crime, we must ask ourselves what we are doing wrong as a society.” She stressed that people have begun treating rape like an ordinary crime, similar to theft, which trivializes the gravity of the issue.
She recounted a recent horrifying case involving the rape of a six-year-old girl, in which children aged 10–13 were involved. “Such incidents are a double shock,” she said, urging society to reflect on the causes behind such disturbing behavior among children.
Film ‘Assi’ urges viewers to question society
Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha, known for socially relevant films like Mulk, Thappad, and Article 15, addresses serious societal issues. Taapsee explained, “This film isn’t just about identifying the criminal; it’s about understanding why such events happen. Viewers must assume the role of a judge and decide what justice truly means.”
Actor Manoj Pahwa added that the film combines courtroom drama with thriller elements, keeping the audience engaged while provoking critical thought. “Every scene raises questions and challenges viewers to reflect on society. That’s the true power of meaningful cinema,” he said.
Release date and cast
Assi will release in theaters on 20 February 2026. Alongside Taapsee Pannu, the cast includes Kani Kusruti, Revathi, Kumud Mishra, Zeeshan Ayyub, Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Seema Pahwa. The film promises a compelling blend of social commentary, courtroom drama, and intense storytelling.
