Ranchi: During a hearing on a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Jharkhand High Court, it was revealed that patients continue to face hurdles in accessing blood due to outdated practices in blood banks. Atul Gera, Secretary of Life Savers, Ranchi unit, informed the bench led by Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan that despite previous court orders, patients still receive blood only when their relatives donate a unit to replenish the blood bank stock.
The PIL was filed following incidents where children in Chaibasa and Ranchi were found HIV-positive due to contaminated blood transfusions. The court heard that the condition requiring relatives to replace blood stock persists even today, creating difficulties for patients in urgent need.
