Famous Names to Be Reserved

According to the company, several prominent and well-known names have already been reserved under the feature. These include celebrities, government institutions, and verified Meta accounts. Only the rightful owners will be able to claim these names to prevent misuse or fake identities.

In addition, WhatsApp has also secured usernames that closely resemble famous names to ensure they are not misused.

Government Concerns and Possible Ban

The central government has raised serious concerns regarding this feature. According to sources, legal options are being considered, and there is also discussion about potentially blocking the feature if necessary. The government believes that the username system could increase the risk of identity theft and online fraud.

WhatsApp Clarification

WhatsApp has clarified that the feature has not yet been fully launched and will be rolled out gradually by the end of the year. The company said it has implemented several technical safeguards, including:

  • Blocking attempts to guess usernames
  • Restricting accounts with repeated failed attempts
  • Limiting the number of new contacts an account can reach
  • System-based monitoring to detect suspicious activity

How the New Feature Will Work

According to the company, when someone sends a message to a user for the first time using a username, the receiver will see details about the sender. It will show whether the sender is a new account, a contact, or from a mutual group, and even indicate the sender’s country.

Phone Number System Will Remain

WhatsApp has also confirmed that even after the introduction of the username feature, a phone number will still be required to register and use the platform.

Conclusion

The company stated that its goal is to improve user experience while ensuring maximum security and privacy. Discussions between the government and WhatsApp are ongoing, and a final decision on the feature is expected in the coming days.
