Hanuman Ji’s Ashta Siddhi: The Eight Spiritual Powers that Helped Lord Hanuman Triumph in Lanka

In the Hanuman Chalisa, the line “Ashta Siddhi Nav Nidhi Ke Data, Aswar Deen Janki Mata” refers to Lord Hanuman as the bestower of eight siddhis and nine treasures. According to scriptures, Goddess Sita blessed Hanuman with these divine powers, which he later used to raise the flag of Lord Rama’s victory in Lanka. Attaining these siddhis is considered extremely rare, and those who possess them can transcend material attachments and worldly desires.

The Eight Siddhis of Lord Hanuman

  1. Anima (Shrinking Power):
Enables the body to become as small as an atom. Hanuman used this power to survey Lanka invisibly, adopting a tiny form that no one could detect.
  2. Mahima (Expansion Power):
Grants the ability to expand one’s body to an enormous size. Using Mahima, Hanuman defeated Surasa by enlarging his body to a hundred yojanas.
  3. Garima (Weight Power):
Allows the body to become extraordinarily heavy while maintaining its normal size. Hanuman employed Garima to make his tail immovably heavy, even for mighty Bhima during the Mahabharata era.
  4. Laghima (Lightness Power):
Makes the body extremely light, allowing it to fly through the air. Hanuman used Laghima to reach Ashok Vatika, where he met Sita Mata discreetly.
  5. Prapti (Ability to Obtain Anything):
Enables one to attain anything. Hanuman communicated with animals and birds using this siddhi to locate Sita Mata during his search.
  6. Prakamya (Control Over Events):
Grants the ability to shape any circumstance at will. Hanuman could fly, enter the earth, or survive underwater using Prakamya, performing seemingly impossible feats.
  7. Ishitva (Supremacy/Leadership Power):
Confers exceptional leadership and divine authority. Hanuman utilized Ishitva to lead the Vanara army efficiently. This siddhi elevates a devotee to a godly stature.
  8. Vashitva (Control Over Others):
Bestows control over people and objects, guiding them to achieve desired outcomes. Hanuman used Vashitva to direct others in accomplishing his divine mission.

By mastering these Ashta Siddhis, Lord Hanuman exemplified devotion, courage, and divine power, ultimately enabling Lord Rama’s triumph in Lanka. These spiritual powers symbolize the union of strength, intelligence, and devotion, inspiring devotees to cultivate unwavering faith and courage in their own lives.
