Jail Warder Dies After Illness in Mirzapur; Wife Alleges Leave for Treatment Was Denied

Mirzapur, February 23, 2026: A 45-year-old jail warder posted at the district prison in Mirzapur died on Sunday following a brief illness, sparking allegations from his family that he was denied leave for medical treatment. Jail authorities, however, have rejected the claims.

The deceased, identified as Anand Shukla, was originally a resident of Harn village in Khetasarai, Jaunpur district. He had been serving at the Mirzapur District Jail for the past six months.

Health Deteriorated Suddenly

According to his wife, Preeti Shukla, Anand had been unwell for the past three days and was experiencing tingling sensations in his legs. On Sunday evening around 7 pm, his condition reportedly worsened suddenly.

He was initially treated by the prison doctor. As his condition failed to improve, he was shifted to the divisional hospital in Mirzapur, where doctors in the emergency ward declared him dead.

Wife Alleges Denial of Leave

Preeti alleged that her husband had requested leave from the jail superintendent to seek proper medical treatment but was denied permission.

“Had he been granted leave, he could have received better treatment and might have survived,” she claimed, accusing the authorities of negligence.

Jail Superintendent Denies Allegations

Responding to the accusations, Jail Superintendent R.P. Chaudhary refuted the claims. He stated that Anand Shukla had recently been granted a week’s leave to attend his brother-in-law’s wedding and was regularly provided leave as required.

“Whenever he was unwell, he received medical attention. The allegations being made by the family are incorrect,” Chaudhary said.

The incident has raised questions regarding workplace medical support and administrative procedures, with local authorities yet to comment on whether any formal inquiry will be initiated.

Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the warder’s death is awaited.
