Kolkata, West Bengal: In the aftermath of violent clashes between two student groups, Jadavpur University has imposed a ban on student gatherings on campus after 8 PM. The decision, announced by the university administration, will come into effect from Tuesday.
The move follows a violent incident on Friday at the Science–Arts crossing inside the campus, where clashes between rival student groups left two professors and at least six students injured. Tensions reportedly continued into Monday, when an English Department student was assaulted and later hospitalized.
Teachers’ Association Demands Action
The Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) wrote to Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, demanding disciplinary action against six students allegedly involved in Friday’s violence. The association warned that it would resort to a work stoppage if the administration failed to act by Tuesday.
“We are shocked and angry. It is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure a safe, fearless, and democratic atmosphere on campus,” said Partha Pratim Ray, General Secretary of JUTA.
Professors Injured While Intervening
According to reports, Professors Rajeshwar Sinha and Lalit Lalitav Mohakud were injured while attempting to mediate the clash. Professor Sinha recounted that he and a research scholar were returning from work when they saw two student groups engaged in a fight.
“We, along with other professors, tried to intervene and managed to calm the situation for about 25–30 minutes,” he said. However, another group of students allegedly entered the scene, using abusive language and attacking people indiscriminately.
“One punch hit me in the eye. I was caught in the crowd and couldn’t see how they arrived. My glasses broke, and I fell down. I was stunned for some time,” Professor Sinha said, adding that in all his years at the university, he had never witnessed such violence.
Administration’s Response
University authorities stated that the restriction on late-night gatherings aims to prevent further escalation and restore order on campus. Officials have assured that the matter is under review and appropriate action will be taken following investigation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about campus safety, student politics, and administrative oversight at one of the country’s premier educational institutions.
