From Justice to Prosperity: Nitish Kumar Embarks on 17th ‘Samriddhi Yatra’—Why Champaran Holds Special Significance

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to launch his 17th state-wide ‘Samriddhi Yatra’ on January 16, 2026. What began as the historic ‘Nyay Yatra’ in 2005—aimed at bringing justice and a change in government—has now evolved into a campaign celebrating two decades of good governance and development. Once again, the historic land of Champaran will serve as the symbolic starting point for this political and developmental journey.

The Journey from Justice to Prosperity
Known as the “traveller of Bihar’s public pulse,” Nitish Kumar has consistently used journeys to connect with the people. His 2005 Nyay Yatra, which challenged the then Rabri government, laid the foundation for his political ascent. Over the past 20 years, he has undertaken 16 major state-wide journeys, engaging directly with citizens and monitoring development initiatives. Following his overwhelming victory in the 2025 elections, the upcoming Samriddhi Yatra focuses on translating good governance into tangible prosperity across the state. It is designed not only to showcase completed projects but also to reinforce public trust and participation.

Champaran: The ‘Lucky’ Starting Point
Western Champaran has historically been a fortuitous region for Nitish Kumar. Many of his landmark journeys have commenced here, and this year is expected to follow suit, with the Yatra likely beginning from symbolic towns such as Bhitiharwa or Valmikinagar. Starting from this land, celebrated as Gandhi’s action-ground, is seen as a harbinger of political strength and public goodwill for the Chief Minister.

A New Chapter in Good Governance
The Samriddhi Yatra aims to assess the ground-level impact of the Seven Resolves (Saat Nishchay) and other welfare schemes. Nitish Kumar will personally visit districts to ensure that development initiatives are reaching every village. The journey will also serve as a crucial platform to gauge citizen expectations and shape the roadmap for the next five years of governance in Bihar.
