Lucknow: New Year celebrations in Lucknow’s Hazratganj area on the night of 31 December turned chaotic when a drunken police constable allegedly tried to run over fellow officers and defy traffic authorities. The constable, identified as Soumya Jaiswal, who is posted at Barabanki Police Lines, was arrested after a tense confrontation.
Incident During Heavy Crowds
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when large crowds had gathered in Hazratganj for New Year festivities. To maintain order and manage traffic, police had set up diversions. Around this time, Jaiswal, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, reached Atal Chowk in his car. When a duty officer instructed him to move the vehicle aside, Jaiswal allegedly argued with the officer, verbally abused him, and attempted to flee by driving dangerously.
70 Meters of High-Speed Chaos
The accused allegedly drove his vehicle at high speed for about 70 meters, attempting to run over multiple police personnel. Officers on the scene quickly placed barriers to stop the car. DCP Traffic Kamlesh Dixit, who was inspecting the area, intervened, but Jaiswal also confronted him, using abusive language and threatening to remove his uniform. Police eventually overpowered the constable and took him to Hazratganj Police Station in a police jeep.
Alcohol Bottles Seized from Car
During the search, authorities found both empty and full liquor bottles, glasses, and alcohol stored on the dashboard. The car windows were tinted with black film. Police have seized the vehicle and initiated further legal proceedings against the arrested officer.
