Mangaluru, February 23, 2026: In a tragic and heartbreaking incident from Thokkottu in Karnataka, an eight-year-old girl lost her life after accidentally swallowing a small plastic Ludo piece while playing at home.
The deceased child, identified as Tanishka, was a second-grade student. Her family originally hails from Kasaragod district and was residing in a rented house near Kolya, close to Thokkottu.
Accident During Playtime
According to reports, Tanishka was at home due to a school holiday and was playing Ludo with her siblings. During the game, she accidentally put a cone-shaped plastic token into her mouth, which slipped down her throat. Within moments, she began experiencing severe breathing difficulty.
Her mother, noticing her distress, immediately sought help from neighbors. The child was rushed to a private hospital in Thokkottu. Due to her critical condition, doctors referred her to another private hospital in Deralakatte for advanced treatment. Despite desperate efforts by medical teams, Tanishka could not be saved.
Postmortem Reveals Cause of Death
The postmortem examination confirmed that a plastic game piece had become lodged in her airway, leading to suffocation. Doctors stated that the obstruction in her respiratory tract prevented her from breathing properly, ultimately causing her death.
A Wake-Up Call for Parents
The incident has raised serious concerns about the dangers posed by small plastic toys and board game pieces, especially for young children. Experts warn that small objects can easily become choking hazards if placed in the mouth, even accidentally during play.
Authorities and child safety advocates are urging parents to remain vigilant and supervise young children while they play, particularly with small detachable items.
The tragic loss of young Tanishka has left the local community in shock, serving as a painful reminder of how seemingly harmless household items can pose life-threatening risks.
