Half of Delhi’s Prisoners Are Under 30, Reveals Government Data

A startling new government report shows that more than half of the inmates in Delhi’s prisons are under the age of 30, highlighting the growing involvement of youth in criminal activities.

Youth Dominance in Prisons
Out of 18,969 prisoners across the capital’s 16 correctional facilities, 9,434 inmates (approximately 50%) are aged 21 to 30. The next largest group, 7,222 prisoners, fall in the 31–50 age bracket, while 1,104 inmates are between 18 and 20 years old. Overall, more than 55% of Delhi’s prison population is under 30, and 70% are below 50. Only 167 inmates are aged 65 or above.

Nationality and Gender Breakdown
The vast majority of prisoners, 18,248 or 96%, are Indian citizens. The remaining are foreign nationals, many facing charges related to drug offenses. Alarmingly, 16,512 inmates (about 87%) are undertrial, awaiting court verdicts, while the rest are convicted. Male prisoners constitute over 98% of the population. Among 741 female inmates, 453 (61%) are aged 31 to 50, with the majority of female prisoners over 30.

Socioeconomic Factors Behind Youth Crime
A former Delhi government law secretary, speaking on condition of anonymity, told TOI that unemployment, poverty, and lack of steady income play a key role in pushing young people toward crime. Many inmates entered the criminal world seeking quick money and come from economically disadvantaged families.

The data underscores the urgent need for preventive measures, including youth engagement programs, skill development, and employment opportunities, to reduce the growing trend of young people ending up behind bars in Delhi.
