Exclusive: ‘Mardaani 3’ Director Abhiraj Minawala Talks Ranbir’s Evolution Since ‘Rocket Singh’; Salman vs SRK—Who’s Better?

Rani Mukerji’s “Mardaani 3” is winning hearts at the box office, with audiences praising both the gripping storyline and Rani’s powerhouse performance. The film has already earned ₹65.5 crore worldwide, garnering widespread love and acclaim. Director Abhiraj Minawala, known for films like Rocket Singh and Luv Yaatri, shares insights into the film, his journey, and working with Bollywood’s top stars in an exclusive conversation with Navbharat Times.

On the Love for “Mardaani 3”

“I am extremely happy seeing the response from audiences,” says Abhiraj. “People are sending me personal messages. The love I’m receiving is very special and humbling.”

Credit Where It’s Due

When asked about why Mardaani 3 resonates more than the previous installments, Abhiraj credits Rani Mukerji first. “Her fanbase, which she has built and maintained over decades, is incredible. I also give credit to the directors of Mardaani 1 and 2. They set a benchmark for excellence.”

Why the Long Gap After ‘Luv Yaatri’

“After Luv Yaatri, the response wasn’t as strong. I realized I needed more time to figure out the type of films I wanted to make and the kind of work I wanted to pursue. Then COVID came, giving me time to think. Discussions with Aditya Chopra helped me understand what kind of project would work and how to approach it,” he shares.

Salman vs Shah Rukh: Who’s Easier to Work With?

Abhiraj, who has worked with both, remains diplomatic:
“It’s impossible to compare. Both are incredible. Their methods are different but equally effective. Both are dear to me, and I’ve been a fan of both. I can’t choose.”

Working with Yash Raj Films and Rani Mukerji

“I’ve been associated with Yash Raj Films since Rocket Singh, when I was a junior director. Adi sir (Aditya Chopra) is extremely passionate, focused, and gives opportunities to new talent. Rani Mukerji’s 30 years of experience reflect in her work. She immerses herself in every project, always prioritizing the craft.”

Ranbir Kapoor’s Journey

Abhiraj also worked with Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh: “Ranbir’s journey in every film is remarkable. He completely transforms into his characters. He’s such a fine performer that he convinces you entirely of the role he’s playing.”

Future Projects

Looking ahead, Abhiraj says: “I want to make all kinds of films to entertain audiences even more. Yash Raj Films is like home for me, so I will continue my journey with them and make films that resonate.”
