Canada remains a top destination for Indian students seeking higher education, attracting thousands of students every year. In 2024, over 4.27 lakh Indian students studied in Canada, and the number is expected to rise in 2026. Post-pandemic, the growth in Indian student admissions has been particularly rapid, driven by top universities and the availability of post-study work visas.
Student Visa vs Study Permit
Many students confuse the Canadian student visa with a study permit. However, they are distinct:
- Student Visa: Required for entry into Canada.
- Study Permit: Allows students to stay and study in Canada after admission.
After receiving admission to a Canadian university, students must apply for a study permit. Once approved, students do not receive it immediately. Instead, they are issued a Port of Entry (POE) Letter, along with a temporary resident visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which acts as their entry document.
At the Canadian border, a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer conducts an interview, checking the student’s documents and admission details before issuing the study permit. Students must comply with all rules of the study permit and update it in case of any changes during their studies.
Required Documents for a Canadian Student Visa
Students must apply online via the official CIC website (canada.ca) at least three months before departure. The documents typically required include:
- Letter of Acceptance from the university
- Valid Passport
- Proof of sufficient funds for education (bank statement, scholarship, or education loan certificate)
- Educational documents (10th, 12th certificates, and others)
- Police clearance certificate
- Medical examination certificate
English Language Requirement
Proficiency in English is mandatory. Students must submit scores from tests like IELTS or TOEFL. The minimum IELTS score required is 6.0 for admission.
Canada’s high-quality universities, combined with opportunities for post-study employment, make it an attractive option for Indian students. Proper documentation and preparation ensure a smooth visa process and successful entry into Canadian education programs.
