Europe: Every year, millions of Indians move abroad seeking better jobs and higher savings. While many achieve career success, some discover that professional achievements do not guarantee personal happiness. A 59-year-old Indian IT professional working in the Netherlands recently shared his experience, highlighting the emotional challenges of a decades-long career abroad.
The worker spent 30 years in the Dutch IT sector, holding positions from programmer and architect to senior management across 15 different companies. His career was financially successful, amassing a net worth of $4 million and living debt-free with EU citizenship. Despite this, he expressed deep regret over the lack of lasting personal relationships.
Sharing his story on Reddit under the post titled “Three Decades in Europe’s IT Sector Left Me Feeling Empty”, he revealed that friendships formed at work often disappeared once he left a company. Colleagues who seemed friendly during office events or casual conversations eventually stopped responding to messages, leaving a void he describes as impossible to fill.
He acknowledged that the Netherlands’ work culture is socially warm on the surface, with colleagues sharing personal stories during office gatherings. Yet, beneath the camaraderie, he found a persistent sense of isolation that money and career success could not overcome.
This story highlights the emotional realities of working abroad, reminding prospective expatriates that professional achievements may not always translate into personal fulfillment.
