Trump Administration Sets Record: Over 100,000 Foreign Visas Canceled in Less Than a Year

Washington: The Donald Trump administration has canceled over 100,000 visas for foreign nationals in less than a year, setting an unprecedented record. According to the US State Department, approximately 8,000 of these cancellations were student permits. The decision, implemented in 2025, is being described as the largest effort ever undertaken to enhance border security and protect American citizens.

Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, said, “This action reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to safeguarding American citizens and upholding US sovereignty.”

A Historic Increase in Visa Cancellations
Pigott noted that the cancellations represent a sharp escalation compared to previous years. In just under a year, the department revoked over 100,000 visas, marking a record high. Since 2024, the number of visa cancellations has increased by more than 150 percent.

New, Stricter Policy in Action
The State Department explained that the visa cancellations targeted foreign nationals implicated in various criminal cases, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence. The increase in revocations is attributed to enhanced monitoring and enforcement mechanisms introduced by the Trump administration.

A key innovation is the recently launched Continuous Vetting Center, which allows authorities to track visa holders even after entry into the United States. Under this system, visas are revoked immediately if the individual is later found to pose a threat to American citizens. Previously, checks were limited to the visa application process or at the point of entry.

Focus on Security, Not Nationality
Pigott emphasized that the policy reflects a broad commitment to national security. “The Trump administration will protect the country from foreign nationals who pose a threat,” he said. However, officials did not specify which countries saw the highest number of visa cancellations or provide a breakdown by tourists, students, or long-term residents.

The move comes at a time when US visa policy has become a central issue in both domestic and foreign policy under Trump. Under US law, the government has the authority to revoke visas for individuals deemed ineligible or posing a security risk.
