Imphal, Feb 9, 2026: Violence once again flared up in Ukhrul district, Manipur, after an attack on a member of the Tangkhul Naga community triggered communal tensions. Armed militants reportedly set fire to several houses, escalating unrest in the area.
Officials reported that in Litan Sarei Khong village, clashes between two tribal groups involved intense stone-pelting, further aggravating the situation. Around midnight, militants from the Kuki community allegedly torched several homes belonging to Tangkhul Nagas. Homes of some Kuki families in nearby areas were also reportedly set ablaze.
The Tangkhul Nagas are the largest Naga tribe in Manipur, while Litan Sarei Khong is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community. Authorities are currently assessing the damage, and the situation remains tense. Videos circulating on social media show armed individuals setting houses and vehicles on fire, and firing shots into the air using advanced weaponry.
Security Response:
To restore law and order and prevent movement of suspected troublemakers, additional security personnel were deployed in Mahadev, Lambui, Shangkai, and surrounding areas leading to Litan. Security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the two warring tribal groups in Litan Sarei Khong.
Curfew Imposed:
A notice issued by the Ukhrul District Magistrate warned that tensions between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities posed a threat to public peace and order. A curfew was imposed from 7 PM on Sunday until further notice, restricting residents from leaving their homes. Government officials and security personnel are exempt from the curfew.
Background of the Incident:
The unrest was triggered when seven to eight individuals allegedly attacked a Tangkhul Naga villager in Litan. While the victim’s party and the village head initially agreed to resolve the matter through traditional mediation, the scheduled Sunday meeting did not take place. Instead, a group of villagers from nearby Sikibung village allegedly attacked the village head’s residence in Litan Sarei Khong, reportedly firing seven rounds near the local police station.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of residents.
