Motihari, Bihar: The expansion of Raxaul Airport, located near the India-Nepal border, is now moving at a rapid pace. To enhance strategic connectivity in border regions, the Bihar government has sanctioned ₹207.70 crore for acquiring an additional 139 acres of land. Following this, the district administration has expedited compensation payments to landowners.
The airport holds special significance for both the central and state governments. Its expansion aims to improve border connectivity and strengthen the region’s economic and commercial potential.
Expansion Layout Ready
The Special Secretary of the Civil Aviation Department, Nilesh Ramchandra Devre, recently shared a blueprint of the project, confirming that the layout for Raxaul Airport’s redevelopment is ready. An official stated, “Once compensation payments to farmers are completed, runway expansion work will commence immediately. The redevelopment will enhance India-Nepal connectivity and foster stronger economic, trade, and social ties.”
During his ‘Samriddhi Yatra’ in January, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited East Champaran and instructed officials to accelerate land acquisition to improve air connectivity in the state’s border regions.
From a Brownfield Project to a Modern Airport
Originally built on 153 acres during the 1962 India-China war, Raxaul Airport is being redeveloped as a brownfield project. The runway will be extended to 2,360 meters, nearly 1,000 meters longer than the current strip.
Rafale, Tejas, and Other Fighter Jets to Land Here
According to civil aviation sources, the airport is being designed with strategic defense requirements in mind. Indian Air Force jets such as Rafale, Tejas, Jaguar, and MiG-29 will be able to land here during emergencies or military operations.
Post-expansion, commercial aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 will also operate from Raxaul, opening the door to direct flights connecting Champaran with major cities. The new layout includes a modern terminal building, air traffic control tower, airport colony, and upgraded parking facilities.
