Delhi/Chandigarh: Tensions escalated in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday over the suspension of eight MPs, as protests by Congress leaders spilled outside Parliament. During the demonstration, a heated exchange took place between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu.
Rahul Gandhi referred to Bittu as a “traitor friend,” prompting a sharp rebuttal from Bittu, who called Gandhi a “country’s enemy” and stated that he has no connection with those who harm the nation. Reports also note that Bittu refused to shake hands with Gandhi during the confrontation.
Who is Ravneet Singh Bittu?
Ravneet Singh Bittu, the Union Minister of State, had joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections after leaving Congress. Although he contested the election on a BJP ticket and lost, he was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Bittu currently serves as Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing in the NDA’s third term. He is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister the late Beant Singh and remains the only leader from Punjab to hold a ministerial post in Modi 3.0 government.
Bittu had previously won the Ludhiana seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019 on a Congress ticket before switching allegiance to the BJP.
Why He Left Congress
Upon leaving Congress, Bittu had stated that the party needed introspection, especially if it is losing its best leaders and workers. He alleged that Congress was facing confusion, disorder, and internal contradictions and lacked clarity on how to respond to the current political scenario. Bittu emphasized Punjab’s strategic importance as a border state that is always vulnerable to anti-national forces and said only the BJP, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dynamic leadership, could advance a truly nationalist agenda.
