Muslim Woman Marries Dalit Man in Haryana, Seeks Protection, Alleges Threats by MLA Maman Khan

Nuh, Haryana: A Muslim woman in Nuh district has married a Dalit man, Mohit, in a consensual inter-caste marriage, and has now sought police protection, claiming threats from local politicians. The marriage, conducted legally through a court, has sparked controversy in the village of Patla Shahpuri in Firozpur Jhirka.

Woman Alleges Family and Political Pressure
The woman, Nazrana, stated in a video posted on social media that she married Mohit of her own free will and is happy with her husband. She clarified that she is of legal age and her statement has been recorded in court. Nazrana alleged that her own family submitted a falsified birth certificate in court in an attempt to challenge the marriage.

Nazrana further claimed that Mohit’s family faced social ostracism from some villagers due to their Dalit background, allegedly encouraged by MLA Maman Khan, who is related to her family. She said the intimidation forced Mohit’s family to leave Patla Shahpuri village. Nazrana has requested authorities to provide security to Mohit and his family and facilitate their safe return to the village. She emphasized that she brought no valuables—only her essential documents, including her Aadhaar card.

Nazrana’s Video Statement
In the approximately 90-second video, Nazrana introduced herself, stating: “My name is Nazrana, daughter of Junaid, from Firozpur Jhirka. I married Mohit of my own choice and I am happy with him. There was no pressure from Mohit or his family. MLA Maman Khan is related to my family, but my parents colluded with him to submit a false birth certificate in court. My age is completely legal. MLA Maman Khan has been threatening Mohit’s family because they belong to the Dalit community. His intimidation forced them to leave the village.”

Administration Responds
SDM Laxmi Narayan confirmed that authorities are closely monitoring the situation. During an on-site inquiry, Tehsildar Ravi Kumar spoke with villagers, including women and members of the Hindu community, who stated that there was no social boycott or coercion in the village. According to villagers, Mohit, his father, and uncle left the village voluntarily in January without informing anyone. The SDM assured that all necessary measures would be taken to maintain law and order, and no formal case of forced displacement has been registered.
