Mumbai, February 3:
The recently constructed Mira-Bhiandar flyover in Mira Road, built at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore, has become the center of public debate and social media attention. Designed as a four-lane bridge, the structure unexpectedly narrows to two lanes, raising concerns about traffic safety and earning it the nickname “Bridge of Death” among critics.
The issue has reached the highest levels, with complaints submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Anand Dube, a local leader from the Uddhav faction, has demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against officials, contractors, and consulting firms involved in the project.
Authorities from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) defended the design, stating that the lane reduction is intentional and planned to accommodate traffic flow at Golden Nest Circle and the limited right-of-way beyond Bhayandar East. The two-lane section is designed to be expanded in the future, with provisions for additional lanes along the outer carriageways to ensure smooth east-west traffic.
Despite the official explanation, social media has been flooded with memes and criticism, with residents questioning the safety and logic of the flyover’s sudden narrowing. While some have sarcastically called it an “engineering marvel,” others have warned that the design could increase accident risk rather than reduce it.
The Mira-Bhiandar flyover, part of the ambitious Metro Line 9 project, was intended to ease traffic congestion in one of Mumbai’s busiest junctions. However, its design has inadvertently turned it into a topic of public scrutiny and online debate.
