The Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) has submitted a proposal to construct three new parking facilities across the city at a total cost of ₹500 crore, aiming to address the growing parking challenges in the capital. The projects will commence once they receive approval from the Delhi government.
The plan comes as a response to Delhi’s increasing vehicle population and the shortage of parking spaces in key areas. According to the proposal, the first multi-level parking will be built on Eidgah Road in the City-Sadar Paharganj zone, on the site of an old slaughterhouse. This facility will have three floors and is estimated to cost ₹346 crore.
The second parking project is proposed for Rajendra Nagar, featuring a basement, stilt, and three upper floors, with an estimated cost of ₹76.6 crore. The third facility will be developed at Shastri Park, Karol Bagh, mirroring the design of the Rajendra Nagar project, at a projected cost of ₹101.7 crore.
Breakup of Estimated Costs:
- Eidgah Road: ₹346 crore
- Shastri Park, Karol Bagh: ₹101.7 crore
- Rajendra Nagar: ₹76.6 crore
An MCD official highlighted that parking is one of Delhi’s biggest civic challenges, primarily due to the scarcity of available land. “We can build as many parking facilities as we want, but the real challenge is finding space. In many markets, no land is available nearby, forcing us to construct parking a little away, which people hesitate to walk from,” the official said.
The official further emphasized the importance of identifying areas with the highest parking demand and carefully selecting available land to maximize utility. Detailed project reports (DPRs) outlining design, capacity, feasibility, and construction methodology will be prepared for each site once the projects are approved.
Future Plans:
Additional parking facilities are also planned in other parts of the city. These include:
- Bank Street, Karol Bagh – 500 vehicles
- Punjabi Bagh Club Road – 276 vehicles
- Bharat Darshan Park, Punjabi Bagh – 188 vehicles
- Shastri Park, Karol Bagh – 577 vehicles
- Rajendra Nagar – 464 vehicles
- Pusa Lane – 381 vehicles
- Rani Bagh – 500 vehicles
Currently, the MCD operates 419 surface parking lots and 30 multi-level parking facilities. Automated parking for 136 vehicles at Hauz Khas (DMRC) and 246-vehicle parking at Central Market, Lajpat Nagar, has also been completed.
Existing parking facilities open to the public include Andheria Mod (56 vehicles), Amar Colony, Lajpat Nagar (81 vehicles), near Nizamuddin Basti (86 vehicles), Gandhi Maidan, Chandni Chowk (2,338 vehicles), Qutub Road (174 vehicles), and Nigam Bodh Ghat (96 vehicles). Additional completed projects include Punjabi Bagh Shmashan Ghat (225 vehicles) and GK-1 Market (399 vehicles), while work is ongoing near Fatehpuri Market, close to the Red Fort, for a 196-vehicle parking facility.
These initiatives are expected to significantly ease the city’s chronic parking problems and better accommodate Delhi’s growing number of vehicles.
