Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: Residents of Uttar Pradesh will now find it significantly easier and cheaper to get a new electricity connection, thanks to the latest rate revisions by the Power Corporation. Effective from January 11, the cost of new 1 kW and 2 kW connections has been nearly halved, and security deposits for prepaid connections will no longer be collected.
According to the new Cost Data Book issued by the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) on December 31, 2025, and implemented by electricity companies by January 12, the revised charges bring substantial relief to consumers. Previously, a 1 kW connection cost ₹6,400; under the new rates, the same connection will cost only ₹3,198. Single-phase smart meters are now priced at ₹2,800, while three-phase smart meters cost ₹4,100.
No Security Deposit for Prepaid Meters:
The new guidelines also eliminate the previously collected ₹6,016 fee for smart prepaid meters, ensuring greater transparency and affordability for consumers. The move comes in response to concerns raised by the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumers Council to protect consumers from excessive charges.
Significant Consumer Benefit:
Avadhesh Kumar Verma, President of the UP State Electricity Consumers Council and member of the State Advisory Committee, stated that between September 10, 2025, and January 11, 2026, around 3,59,261 estimates were submitted for new connections. If adjustments are made for earlier excess collections, nearly ₹116 crore will need to be refunded to consumers through their electricity bills.
Verma emphasized that the council’s objective is to make electricity connections affordable, transparent, and free from any undue charges, ensuring fair treatment for all consumers in the state.
