Former UP IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur Secretly Released from Deoria Jail

Deoria, Feb 12, 2026: Former Uttar Pradesh IPS officer Amitabh Thakur was quietly released from Deoria Jail on Wednesday evening, leaving authorities and the public unaware until after the fact. Thakur, who had been in jail since December 10, was freed following the issuance of a release order, and he left the facility with his family without attracting any attention.

Background of the Case
Thakur was arrested in connection with alleged irregularities in a plot allocation at the Deoria Industrial Estate. In 1999, while serving as the Superintendent of Police in Deoria, he had arranged the allocation of a plant in his wife Nutan Thakur’s name. During the documentation process, the names were incorrectly recorded—Amitabh as “Ajitabh” and Nutan as “Nutan Devi.” In September 2025, a fraud case related to this allocation was registered at Tal Katora police station in Lucknow, and the investigation was handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Thakur was arrested on December 9, 2025, while traveling to Delhi and brought to Deoria Jail after a court appearance. Although he had been granted bail in January, his release was delayed due to a “Warrant B” issued by Gomtinagar police in Lucknow. Once the court canceled the warrant, his path to release was cleared.

Thakur in the Spotlight Even in Jail
During his incarceration, Amitabh Thakur remained in the news for various reasons. He had staged a hunger strike over the seizure of his personal belongings by police, which he ended following assurances from the court. He also reported receiving threatening letters at his barracks and had claimed to possess crucial evidence related to the codeine cough syrup case implicating senior political figures. Thakur had alleged that his arrest was politically motivated to suppress these revelations.

Quiet Release, Public Reaction Pending
After his release, Thakur left Deoria discreetly with his family. His lawyer, Praveen Dwivedi, confirmed that the jail had received the release order in the evening, but further details were not immediately available.

The secretive nature of the release has already raised eyebrows, and the case continues to attract attention due to Thakur’s outspoken stance on corruption and alleged political interference.
