The protest by farmers against the proposed ethanol factory at Rathikheda village in Tibbi block of Hanumangarh district has intensified, with a massive Mahapanchayat being held in Sangaria on Tuesday. Anticipating large gatherings and potential law-and-order issues, the district administration has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and suspended internet services until late evening.
According to officials, more than 600 police personnel have been deployed in and around Sangaria to maintain peace. Additional security forces have been called in from Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner and Churu districts. The administration remains on high alert as thousands of farmers are expected to participate in the Mahapanchayat.
Farmers Firm on Their Demands
The protesting farmers are demanding the cancellation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed for the ethanol plant and the withdrawal of cases registered against protesters during earlier agitations. They fear that the establishment of the factory would lead to environmental pollution, excessive exploitation of irrigation water, and eventually render fertile agricultural land barren.
Former MLA Balwan Poonia, who has been actively mobilising support across villages, accused the administration of misleading farmers. He said that while officials verbally claim the factory will not be set up, no written order has been issued so far. “Farmers will not be misled and will continue their agitation until they receive a written assurance,” he asserted.
Administration on High Alert
It may be recalled that during an earlier Mahapanchayat in Tibbi, the situation had turned tense, with incidents of arson reported. Following that, the administration indicated that the ethanol plant proposal would be reconsidered. However, farmers continue to insist on a formal written commitment.
District authorities have stated that strict security arrangements are in place and that the situation is being closely monitored. Officials have claimed that they are fully prepared to deal with any untoward incident and to ensure that law and order is maintained during the protest.
