Bihar Gets Its First Biogas Plant in Bettiah; Clean Energy and Natural Fertilizer to Benefit Farmers

Bettiah, Bihar: Bihar has marked a major milestone in clean energy and sustainable agriculture with the completion of its first biogas plant in Kumarbagh, Bettiah. Built at a cost of ₹100 crore, the project is being hailed as a key achievement coinciding with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Samriddhi Yatra.

According to government officials, the biogas plant will significantly boost Bihar’s energy capacity, reduce dependence on imported chemical fertilizers, and provide direct economic benefits to farmers. The initiative is also seen as a major step toward environmental conservation and building an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) Bihar.

How the Biogas Plant Works

The Kumarbagh biogas plant uses cow dung, agricultural residue, organic waste, and other biodegradable materials to produce biogas. This gas can be used for electricity generation, cooking fuel, and industrial purposes, thereby reducing reliance on conventional fuels such as firewood, coal, and LPG.

A key highlight of the project is its dual benefit model—while waste materials are converted into clean energy, the leftover slurry is processed into natural organic fertilizer, which farmers can use in their fields.

Direct Benefits for Farmers and Livestock Owners

The plant is already proving beneficial for local farmers and cattle owners, who earn additional income by supplying cow dung and farm waste to the facility. The organic manure produced as a byproduct helps improve soil fertility and reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers, making agriculture more sustainable and cost-effective.

Boost to Environmental Protection

From an environmental perspective, the plant plays a crucial role in reducing pollution. It helps manage roadside waste, prevents open dumping of organic material, and curbs harmful greenhouse gas emissions caused by decomposing waste. The use of clean energy also lowers the carbon footprint, contributing to climate protection.

Officials believe the Bettiah biogas plant can serve as a model project for the entire state. If similar plants are established across other districts, Bihar could take a major leap toward energy self-sufficiency, cleaner surroundings, and accelerated rural development.
