AI-Assisted Cheating Exposed in Gadchiroli: Officials Shocked as ChatGPT Used During HSC Exams

Nagpur/Gadchiroli: In a startling revelation from Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, a district historically known for Maoist activity and developmental challenges, authorities have uncovered a high-tech cheating racket during the recent Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams. The racket reportedly used ChatGPT to generate answers for subjects including Political Science, Chemistry, and Physics.

Discovery During Exams

Sources from the Education Department revealed that the racket was exposed on February 18 at a center in Chamorshi, just minutes before the exam concluded. Under the supervision of District Council CEO Suhas Gade, a raid revealed answer sheets prepared using AI.

While collecting the distributed papers, officials noticed peon Suraj Keljarkar suspiciously entering the exam hall. His mobile phone was confiscated, and investigations uncovered that he had sent the exam questions to a teacher, Mahendra Kirme, at the same school.

How AI Was Exploited

The probe revealed a sophisticated method: photos of the exam questions were captured and sent outside the hall, fed into ChatGPT to generate instant answers, which were then printed and discreetly returned to students for copying. This “high-tech” cheating method replaced traditional malpractice techniques, significantly undermining the integrity of the exams.

Officials Respond

District CEO Suhas Gade confirmed that an inquiry committee, led by education officers, has been formed to investigate the incident. Four individuals have been suspended, and further actions are underway.

Secondary Education Officer Vasudev Bhuse stated that the HSC Board has already been notified. The names of the accused, including teachers Sushil Lanjewar, Mahendra Burlewar, Mahendra Kirme, and peon Suraj Keljarkar, have been registered in the FIR. Lanjewar has been suspended, with additional disciplinary actions pending for the others.

Impact on Gadchiroli’s Development Efforts

Gadchiroli, once a stronghold of Maoist activity, has been under government and administrative efforts to improve educational access and youth development. The emergence of such a cheating racket raises serious concerns about trust in initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized regions and providing opportunities for students.
