Tilak Varma Makes Strong Comeback; Rishabh Pant Faces Extended Wait Ahead of T20 World Cup

Indian batting sensation Tilak Varma has made a full recovery from injury and returned to the national team, delivering a message of gratitude and confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. His return, however, has made the path back to the playing XI tougher for Rishabh Pant, who was in contention to replace an injured player.

Varma’s Comeback and Gratitude
Speaking after India’s high-scoring warm-up win against South Africa in Navi Mumbai, Tilak thanked the BCCI and the Centre of Excellence, crediting them for his early return. He said the team environment, marked by aggressive batting and strong camaraderie, was motivating. “Playing in front of a packed DY Patil Stadium and hearing fans chant my name boosted my confidence, even though it was just a warm-up match,” Varma said. He emphasized that both he and the Indian squad feel fully prepared for the World Cup.

Match Highlights
Batting first, India posted a formidable 240/5. Ishan Kishan scored a quick 53 off 20 balls, while Abhishek Sharma provided a strong start. Tilak contributed 45 runs off 19 balls, forming a rapid 66-run partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav. Contributions from Axar Patel, Rinku Singh, and Hardik Pandya helped India set a challenging target.

South Africa’s chase faltered early as Arshdeep Singh dismissed George Linde for a duck. Despite a 65-run stand between Edan Markram and Ryan Rickelton, wickets fell at regular intervals, and India secured a 30-run victory. The team now turns its focus to the World Cup opener against the USA on Saturday.

Rishabh Pant’s Challenge
With Tilak fit and performing, Rishabh Pant may have to wait longer for his opportunity in the playing XI. The competition and depth in India’s batting lineup make selection highly competitive, underscoring the challenge Pant faces in making a comeback.
