Kolkata:
Following the historic political change in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari has taken oath as the Chief Minister. However, the biggest question now being discussed across political circles is whether he will be given complete freedom to govern the state independently or whether he will merely be seen following directives from the central leadership.
Discussions have intensified in political corridors regarding the real test that now lies ahead for Suvendu Adhikari in a politically sensitive and strategically important state like West Bengal. Winning an election is undoubtedly a major achievement, but fulfilling the expectations of the people is considered a far greater challenge.
Political experts believe that if Suvendu Adhikari truly wishes to establish his own distinct identity in Bengal politics, he must move beyond political rhetoric and focus seriously on the development of the state. His first priority should be reviving industries and businesses that had once shifted their operations away from West Bengal over the years.
To attract new industries, companies, and investments, the government will need to introduce effective and attractive industrial policies. If large-scale industries are established in the state, new employment opportunities can be created, reducing the dependence of Bengal’s youth on other states for jobs.
For several years, unemployment and migration have remained among the biggest challenges facing West Bengal. A large number of young people have been forced to migrate to states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Delhi in search of employment. In such a situation, people now expect the new government to prioritize economic growth and job creation rather than focusing solely on political confrontation.
Political analysts point out that by defeating Mamata Banerjee twice in electoral battles, Suvendu Adhikari has already demonstrated his political strength. However, his journey as Chief Minister is still far from easy. He will have to manage strong opposition pressure, rising public expectations, and maintain a careful balance between the state administration and the central leadership.
It will now be interesting to see whether Suvendu Adhikari limits himself to symbolic political change or succeeds in giving West Bengal a new direction through industrial, economic, and social transformation.
