Hooghly/Kolkata:
In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Hooghly district emerged as the biggest center of political transformation in the state. Once considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the voters of Hooghly delivered a powerful political message by electing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates on 16 out of 18 Assembly seats. Meanwhile, the TMC was reduced to just two seats in what was once regarded as its traditional support base.
Political analysts believe that the people of Hooghly voted not merely for a change in government, but with expectations of development, employment, education, and better governance. After giving opportunities first to the Left Front government and later to the TMC administration for many years, voters have now handed responsibility to the BJP, clearly expressing their desire for change.

Hooghly district has long been regarded as one of the most politically aware and decisive regions of West Bengal. Voters here closely follow not only local issues but also national and international political developments. For this reason, the electoral verdict from Hooghly has always been viewed as an important political indicator.
Speaking to Sachcha Dost News, internationally acclaimed tabla artist Aditya Narayan Banerjee shared his views on the political atmosphere in the Sreerampur Assembly constituency. He stated that the people of Bengal have witnessed years of struggle, political violence, and repeated changes in power.

He said:
“The land of Bengal has endured decades of pain and political instability. First, the Congress treated Bengal as its political legacy, followed by nearly three decades of Left rule. Later, the people placed their trust in the TMC with hopes of change, but the expected development did not take place. This time, the people of Bengal have once again created a wave of political transformation by giving the BJP an opportunity.”
Recalling the history of elections in Bengal, Aditya Narayan Banerjee also stated that for many years, booth capturing and political violence remained major challenges during elections, directly affecting voter participation. He pointed out that even during the 2021 Assembly elections, several incidents of political violence were reported during both voting and vote counting.
However, according to Banerjee, the situation was significantly different this time. Due to the active role of the Election Commission and paramilitary forces, both voting and vote counting were conducted in a comparatively peaceful and organized manner. Only a few isolated incidents of violence were reported during the election process, including a voting-related dispute in the Falta Assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas and the killing of a close associate of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after the counting process.
Despite these incidents, political observers believe that this time voters displayed greater enthusiasm and stronger trust in the Election Commission. This was clearly reflected in the massive voter turnout across the state, with people participating in the democratic process without fear.
Aditya Narayan Banerjee further stated that the people of Bengal are now expecting concrete development in the fields of education, employment, and industry. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party would work in coordination to provide a new direction for the state’s development.
He also said that under the leadership of newly elected Sreerampur MLA Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Chunchura leader Subir Nag, the region is expected to witness accelerated development work and several new achievements for the benefit of the people.
According to political experts, BJP’s major victory in Hooghly district is not merely an electoral success, but a reflection of Bengal’s changing political mindset and the growing public faith in democracy. Analysts believe that the peaceful completion of the elections will be regarded as a major achievement of the Election Commission and security forces, as it allowed voters to participate in the democratic process without fear or intimidation.
