BJP Expels Social Media Co-Convener Over Controversial AI Video of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Feb 12, 2026: The BJP has removed its Social Media Co-Convener, Ron Vikas Gaurav, from the party following a controversy over an AI-generated video depicting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The video, posted on Assam BJP’s official account on February 7, showed the CM aiming a gun at members of the minority community, with the caption “Point-Blank Shot.”

Video Sparks Nationwide Outcry
The video was deleted shortly after posting due to political backlash. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) filed an FIR at Dispur Police Station, alleging that the content was highly provocative and communal, with potential to disrupt social harmony. Congress MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Diganta Barman claimed the video showed the CM symbolically firing at Muslim community members and contained inflammatory text including “Foreign-Free Assam” and “Why didn’t you go to Pakistan?”

Party Action Taken
In response to the controversy, the BJP removed Ron Vikas Gaurav from his organizational post. The party emphasized that the video did not reflect official party policy.

Complaints Filed Across the Country
The video has led to complaints from various quarters nationwide, with opposition leaders demanding accountability for provocative content. AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi filed a complaint in Hyderabad, labeling the video as “genocidal hate speech” and calling for criminal action against CM Sarma.

CM Sarma Responds
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma denied prior knowledge of the video and stated that he remains firm in his political views. The CM has also filed defamation suits worth ₹500 crore against Congress leaders for various allegations leveled against him.

The incident has intensified the debate over the use of AI in political messaging and the responsibility of parties to prevent the spread of provocative or communal content online.
