Schools to Celebrate Grandparents’ Day: CBSE Issues Guidelines

In a move inspired by practices in the US and Canada, schools across India will now celebrate Grandparents’ Day to strengthen bonds between generations. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared official guidelines following recommendations from the National Council for Senior Citizens and directions from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Under these guidelines, students will be encouraged to bring their grandparents—both maternal and paternal—to school, participating in a variety of activities designed to bridge the generation gap. The initiative aims to foster emotional connections and mutual respect between children and senior citizens.

Grandparents’ Day in India, Following International Practices
The CBSE’s move seeks to extend year-long activities related to this concept, similar to efforts in countries like the US and Canada, where “Grandparents’ Day” is also linked to “Grandfriends” campaigns. These initiatives have proven effective in connecting children with their families while addressing loneliness among seniors.

Planned Activities for Grandparents’ Day
CBSE has suggested schools organize activities that promote intergenerational bonding. Students and their grandparents can take part in events such as walkathons, interactive sessions, storytelling, and cultural programs. Special occasions such as Independence Day, Children’s Day, and International Senior Citizens Day are recommended for such celebrations.

According to the board, participation of senior citizens in school activities helps develop students’ practical understanding, emotional empathy, respect, and moral values. Schools have also been advised to inform the relevant departments or ministries in advance and maintain records of these events.

Strengthening Bonds and Reducing Loneliness
By engaging grandparents in school programs, the initiative aims to reduce social isolation among senior citizens and create meaningful interactions between generations. Students are encouraged to plan creative and interesting activities to deepen these connections.
