Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project: Reducing a 1.5-Hour Commute to Just 15 Minutes
Mumbai’s ambitious Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project is set to revolutionize commuting in the city, significantly reducing travel time between the western and eastern suburbs. The 11.8-kilometer twin tunnels will directly connect Ghodbandar Road in Thane to the Western Express Highway in Borivali, potentially cutting the current 60–90 minute commute down to just 15 minutes.
Project Overview
The tunnels will pass beneath the environmentally sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). Advanced tunnel-boring technology is being employed to minimize environmental impact, ensuring sustainable construction. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including an emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 meters for safety.
