Lucknow/Kolkata:
The recent meeting between West Bengal’s newly appointed Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sparked intense political discussion across the country. During the oath-taking ceremony, when Suvendu Adhikari approached Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Yogi honored him by draping a saffron stole around his shoulders. The moment carried strong political symbolism and has now raised questions about whether the “Yogi Model” could soon be implemented in West Bengal as well.
After taking the oath, Suvendu Adhikari first sought the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then met several senior BJP leaders. However, his interaction with Yogi Adityanath became the highlight of the ceremony. Amid loud chants of “Jai Shri Ram,” Yogi presenting the saffron stole was seen not merely as a gesture of respect, but as a powerful ideological and political message.
What Is the ‘Yogi Model’?
The governance style of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is often referred to as the “Yogi Model,” which combines development and Hindutva as parallel priorities. As the Mahant of the Gorakhnath Math, Yogi Adityanath openly embraces his religious identity while simultaneously focusing on the state’s development. He consistently integrates cultural and religious identity into political discourse alongside economic progress.
Under Yogi’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed major developments in infrastructure, expressways, investment, industrial growth, and law and order. The government has also launched several initiatives aimed at attracting global investors under the vision of transforming Uttar Pradesh into a one-trillion-dollar economy. Political observers now believe that a similar governance model may be attempted in West Bengal.
The Growing Political Bond Between Suvendu Adhikari and Yogi Adityanath
During the West Bengal Assembly election campaign, Suvendu Adhikari was frequently seen sharing political stages with Yogi Adityanath. In one notable public rally, Suvendu had offered a full prostration before Yogi Adityanath, after which many political analysts began comparing his style with that of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.
Now, after the saffron stole ceremony during the oath-taking event, the perception has strengthened further that the Bengal BJP leadership may move forward inspired by Uttar Pradesh’s political and administrative strategies.
Law and Order Will Be the Biggest Test
Yogi Adityanath’s strongest political image in Uttar Pradesh has been built around law and order. His strict actions against criminals, the “bulldozer action,” and aggressive anti-mafia campaigns helped him gain the popular image of “Bulldozer Baba.” This image played a crucial role in BJP’s massive victory in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
West Bengal, too, has long faced criticism over law and order issues, political violence, and alleged criminal syndicates. During the election campaign, Yogi Adityanath had promised that if the BJP formed the government in Bengal, strict action would be taken against criminals in the same manner as in Uttar Pradesh. He had declared that criminals would be jailed and the rule of law would be firmly established.
Women’s safety has also become a major political issue in Bengal, especially after incidents such as the RG Kar case. Yogi Adityanath had repeatedly compared the current situation in Bengal with the condition of Uttar Pradesh before 2017, claiming that just as Uttar Pradesh underwent transformation after 2017, Bengal too could witness similar change under BJP governance.
Major Challenges Before the Suvendu Government
Suvendu Adhikari now faces the difficult challenge of balancing development, law and order, and political stability simultaneously. If his government succeeds in controlling crime, attracting investment, and improving administration, the BJP may eventually project him as a larger national political face in the future.
Political analysts believe that implementing the “Yogi Model” in Bengal will not be easy, as the social and political environment of West Bengal differs significantly from Uttar Pradesh. Nevertheless, the symbolic gesture of the saffron stole has clearly indicated that the BJP is preparing to advance in Bengal with a combined agenda of Hindutva and development.
