Zelensky Ready for Referendum if Russia Agrees to Ceasefire, Ahead of Trump Meeting
Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss a framework aimed at ending the four-year-long war with Russia. Zelensky emphasized that the talks will focus on security guarantees for Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of the Florida meeting, Zelensky said, “If Russia agrees to a ceasefire, we are ready to present the framework for a referendum in Ukraine. However, any referendum would only be feasible if Russia maintains at least a 60-day ceasefire.”
The Ukrainian president added that discussions with Trump will also cover critical issues, including the situation in Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Understanding the Referendum in Ukraine
Zelensky explained that any agreement on territorial matters should ultimately be decided by the Ukrainian people through a referendum. “We want to continue negotiations to secure a better position on the ground. If difficult decisions are needed, the best approach would be to include the full 20-point plan for a referendum,” he said.
He further stressed that a safe environment for voters is crucial: “If people cannot feel secure and therefore do not vote, the results could be deemed illegitimate. If people cannot physically cast their votes, it is better not to hold a referendum at all.”
Nearly 90% of Plan Ready
Zelensky revealed that Ukraine’s 20-point plan is approximately 90% complete. He noted the importance of involving not only Ukraine and the U.S. but also European representatives in finalizing the framework.
The upcoming meeting between Trump and Zelensky marks another effort by the U.S. administration to halt the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Trump officials have maintained continuous contact with Russia, though a final outcome is not yet in sight.Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss a framework aimed at ending the four-year-long war with Russia.
