Will the US Launch a Military Strike on Greenland? Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Speaks Out

Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed hope that the United States will not launch a military strike on Greenland. Speaking on Friday during a New Year press conference, Meloni emphasized that any military action would be counterproductive and urged for a diplomatic solution. Her comments come amid statements by US President Donald Trump suggesting possible control over Greenland, including the option of military intervention.

Meloni Urges Diplomacy Over Military Action
Meloni stated, “I find it hard to believe that the United States would use military force to seize Greenland. Any military action there would benefit no one and could have negative implications for NATO as well.” She highlighted that strengthening NATO’s role in the Arctic could address American security concerns without resorting to conflict. Italy, she clarified, will not support any military measures and is advocating for a peaceful resolution.

US Options Raise Concerns
A White House statement released earlier this week indicated that the administration is considering multiple options, including military measures, to gain strategic control over Greenland—a mineral-rich and geopolitically significant island. The statement has stirred unease not only in Greenland but across Europe.

Strategic Importance of Greenland
Greenland, the world’s largest island, lies between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Geographically part of North America, it is politically and administratively a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. Greenland has a population of around 57,000, and its security and foreign policy fall under Danish jurisdiction.

President Trump has shown strong interest in controlling Greenland, citing threats from China and Russia. He has repeatedly stated that American security requires strategic oversight of the island, regardless of the means necessary.
