Islamabad: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing a serious risk to his eyesight while in prison, according to warnings issued by his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and is currently serving multiple sentences totaling over 60 years.
Khan is imprisoned in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. Reports indicate his health has deteriorated over the past few months. Last month, following protests, his family was temporarily allowed to meet him, but currently no one has access to him, including his lawyers.
Serious Eye Infection
Sources inside Adiala Jail revealed that Khan suffers from severe eye infections and allergies, aggravated by Rawalpindi’s harsh winter and lack of proper medical care. The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) medical teams recently examined him, and doctors suggest he may have Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), a condition requiring specialized treatment and posing a risk of permanent vision loss.
The jail administration claims that treatment is being provided, but facilities inside the prison remain limited. A medical team is scheduled to re-examine him on 31 January. However, sources warn that without proper care, the former cricket captain could lose his eyesight.
Isolation and Legal Troubles
According to The Independent, Khan has not been allowed to meet his family or legal team for over 100 days. He faces more than 100 ongoing cases. PTI senior associate and spokesperson Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari described the situation as “heartbreaking” and alleged it is being carried out deliberately.
The alarming warnings from PTI highlight growing concerns over the treatment and health of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister, raising questions about the humanitarian and legal standards being upheld in the country’s prison system.
