Dhaka, February 13, 2026: Following the sweeping victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the national elections, political dynamics in Bangladesh are shifting rapidly. The Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, may soon open dialogue with BNP, according to remarks by her son, Sajeeb Wazed.
Awami League Eyes Engagement
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Sajeeb Wazed described BNP as “Bangladesh’s largest party” and indicated that Awami League could initiate contact with them soon. “BNP is the major party in Bangladesh. We will reach out to them shortly,” he said. His comments come in the aftermath of the BNP’s decisive electoral triumph under Tarique Rahman, which followed the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus barring Awami League from contesting the elections.
Assuring a Return
Wazed emphasized that the ban on Awami League effectively left BNP with a clear path to victory. He stressed that the party’s support base remains strong, saying: “There is no real opposition at the moment because Awami League was not allowed to contest. But Awami League will return. We are not going anywhere. The people of Bangladesh still love our party. We will come back.”
Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on the party’s landslide win. Posting on the social media platform X, Modi stated: “Heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman for securing a decisive victory for BNP in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. This win reflects the people’s trust in your leadership. India stands with a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh and looks forward to working together to strengthen our shared developmental goals.”
With BNP taking the reins and Awami League signaling potential cooperation, Bangladesh appears poised for a new chapter of political engagement and dialogue, with regional implications for ties with India and neighboring countries.
