Washington: Opposition to potential US control over Greenland is intensifying as all political parties in the island territory have come together in a rare show of unity. Following recent statements from the US suggesting possible strategic or military intervention to gain control over Greenland, local leaders have firmly rejected any such notion.
In a statement released Friday night, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and leaders of four major political parties said, “We do not want to become Americans, nor do we want to be Danish. We want to remain Greenlanders, and we must be allowed to do so. The future of Greenland will be decided by its people.”
No External Pressure
The statement further emphasized that Greenland’s future should be determined without any foreign pressure or interference, in accordance with international law. “As party leaders of Greenland, we reiterate that the hatred or coercion from any external power must end. Decisions about Greenland’s future must be made through consultation with its people alone, free from haste, delay, or external influence,” the statement read. It was signed by Nielsen, Pele Broberg, Mute B. Egede, Aleqa Hammond, and Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.
Strategic Significance of Greenland
Greenland is a strategically important island with a population of roughly 57,000. While it has its own Prime Minister, it does not maintain its own military; defense and security are managed by Denmark. Recent statements from the Trump administration expressing interest in controlling the island have raised concerns in both Greenland and Denmark, highlighting the geopolitical sensitivity of the region.
