Washington, D.C.: Tensions between the United States and India have come under scrutiny following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to New Delhi, with Democratic lawmakers sharply criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s foreign policy.
Congresswoman Sidney Kamlager-Dove Speaks Out
Congresswoman Sidney Kamlager-Dove stated that the warm welcome Putin received in India reflects a failure of Trump’s foreign strategy. “The images of Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin together speak volumes. Trump should understand that pictures don’t lie. The selfies and handshakes with Putin are direct evidence of failed American diplomacy,” she said.
Dove also highlighted the impact of Trump’s trade and visa policies. She criticized the imposition of tariffs on Indian imports and the increase in H-1B visa fees to $100,000, noting that these measures harm Indian professionals working in the U.S., particularly in scientific and medical fields.
Impact of Tariffs on Businesses
Lawmakers argue that Trump’s tariff policies have disrupted long-standing U.S.-India economic relations. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal supported Dove’s criticism, emphasizing that these tariffs not only affect India’s economy but also American businesses and consumers. She cited a family-owned agricultural business in Washington State, operating for over 120 years, which now faces serious challenges due to the tariffs imposed on Indian imports.
Policy Concerns Highlighted
The lawmakers stressed that Trump’s policies, including trade restrictions and visa fee hikes, have strained relationships with a key strategic partner. The criticism underscores growing concern in Congress over the administration’s approach toward India and the potential long-term impact on bilateral ties and U.S. economic interests.
