The Trump administration has approved a massive arms sale to two key US allies in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia and Israel, totaling over $15 billion. The sale includes Apache attack helicopters, Patriot missiles, and a range of other military equipment.
Details of the Sale:
According to ABC News, Israel will receive $6.67 billion worth of arms, while Saudi Arabia will get $9 billion. The US State Department announced the approvals late Friday night, following notification to Congress. The announcement comes amid rising tensions over potential US military action against Iran and President Donald Trump’s efforts to advance a ceasefire plan for Gaza, aiming to end the Israel-Hamas conflict and rebuild Palestinian territories after two years of war.
Saudi Arabia Receives $9 Billion in Weapons:
Saudi Arabia’s package includes 730 Patriot missiles along with associated equipment. The State Department said the sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives in the Gulf region, promoting political stability and economic progress. The announcement coincides with Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman’s visit to Washington, where he met senior officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Israel Receives Apache Helicopters and Tactical Vehicles:
The arms sale to Israel is divided into four separate packages:
- 30 Apache attack helicopters with rockets and advanced targeting systems, valued at $3.8 billion. Often referred to as “flying tanks,” these helicopters form the largest component of the package.
- 3,250 tactical vehicles for $1.98 billion.
- Power packs for armored vehicles currently in Israeli service since 2008, costing $74 million.
- Light utility helicopters valued at $15 million (exact quantity undisclosed).
Some Democrats in Congress have expressed concern over the speed of the deal. Representative Gregory Meeks, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the administration for rushing the announcement regarding Israel. The State Department clarified that these sales would not upset the balance of power in the region.
Summary of Major Weapons in the Sale:
| Country | Weaponry & Equipment | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | 730 Patriot missiles + associated equipment | $9 B |
